What is the Force of Friction?

It is a matter of common experience that a ball rolling on the ground stops after a while. In this way other moving objects also come to rest on their own. Do you know why this happens?

This is because there is a force acting on every moving object, which prevents it from moving. This force always acts in the opposite direction of motion. This is called the frictional force. The force of friction depends on the roughness of a surface. The rougher the surface, the greater the friction. The friction force between smooth surfaces is less.

There are two types of frictional force - the force involved in sliding or sliding and the force in rolling down. The force on rolling objects is less than the force on sliding objects. Therefore it is easier to roll objects than to move them.

Friction is such a gift of nature, which is harmful as well as beneficial. Due to this force, the parts of moving machines keep on wearing down. Due to this the machines get hot, as a result a lot of energy working on them is wasted. Due to friction, the tires of buses, cars, cycle rickshaws etc. keep on wearing out. Lubricants are used in machines to reduce the friction force. These substances include oil, grease, graphite etc. The benefits of friction are also many. If there was no friction, we would not be able to walk on the ground. Not only us, no vehicle can speed up. It was not possible to apply brakes in moving vehicles. Without friction we would not be able to hold anything. As soon as we grabbed an object, it would slip out of our hands. Even writing on paper would not have been possible without friction. Have you ever thought that if this force had been there then even houses would not have been built, because then brick by brick would not have been able to join.

From all these facts, it can be concluded that friction is very important for our life even though it is harmful.
