Here 'Nua' means new and 'Khai' means food. It is an ancient festival celebrated in some areas of western Odisha, southern Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand to welcome the new crop with the changing seasons.
This festival is celebrated a day after Ganesh Chaturthi. On this day farmers worship food and prepare special food. Farmers offer some food grains as the first produce from their land to Goddess Samaleswari, the famous 'Mother Goddess' of Sambalpur district of Odisha.
Apart from this, the local people organize many cultural programs like folk songs and dances in their respective districts on this day which display the local culture and tradition of the state.
