Odisha CM launches 'Ekamra Project' for the redevelopment of 11th-century Lingaraj Temple

As part of his government's effort to develop ancient temples, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik laid the foundation stone of the Rs 280-crore 'Ekamra Project'/Ekamra Area Revival Project for the development of areas around the 11th-century Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar.

Ekamra Kshetra (the ancient name of Bhubaneswar), also known as Ekamra Kshetra Amenities and Monuments Rejuvenation Action Plan, is an initiative launched by the Government of Odisha in 2019, spread over an area of 80 acres around Sri Lingaraj Temple. The Odisha Bridge Construction Corporation (OBCC) under the state works department will be in charge of the project.

The plan includes the conservation of various other ancient temples, sacred ponds, and water bodies associated with the 11th-century temple, and creating facilities for pilgrims visiting the temple.

In the first phase, the focus is on creating a 12-meter-wide mixed-traffic lane to restore architectural and archaeological heritage sites and improve vehicular movement. A 4-10 meter walkway will also be developed around the temple to ensure smooth movement of pedestrians.
