In the 25th Asian Athletics Championships 2023, the Indian contingent secured the third position in the medal tally
The Asian Athletics Championships 2023 was held from 12 to 16 July at the Suphachalsai National Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand. The Indian team won a total of 27 medals in which 6 gold, 12 silver and 9 bronze medals.
This is the best-ever performance by an Indian contingent in the continental event, which won 27 medals, including nine gold, in the 2017 edition on home soil in Bhubaneswar. Target Olympics podium athlete Jyoti Yaraji won India's first gold medal in the women's 100m race at the championships.
India finished third in the medal tally behind Japan (37) and China (22), while China stood second on the back of their high gold medal
tally (8). The Asian Athletics Championships were held after a gap of four years, with the 2021
edition in Hangzhou, China being canceled due to COVID-19. In the previous edition, Doha 2019, India won 16 medals - two gold, seven silver, and seven bronze.

India finished on top only once at the Asian Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar in 2017. PT Usha is the most successful athlete with a record of 23 medals. The inaugural Asian Athletics Championships was held in 1973 in Marikina, Philippines. In India, this game took place in New Delhi in 1989, Pune 2013, and Bhubaneswar in 2017.
