A new landmark has been added to the skyline of Rajsamand, a city in the Indian state of Rajasthan. The world's tallest statue of Lord Shiva, the supreme deity in Hinduism, has been built on a hilltop overlooking the city and the nearby lake. The statue, which stands at 351 feet (107 meters), is made of bronze and depicts Shiva in a meditative pose, with his trident and drum in his hands. The statue is surrounded by a circular platform that can accommodate up to 10,000 devotees at a time.
The statue was inaugurated on February 27, 2023, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who praised the project as a symbol of India's cultural and spiritual heritage. He also said that the statue would inspire people to follow the path of peace and harmony that Shiva represents. The project was funded by a private trust, which spent over Rs 500 crore (about $67 million) on the construction and maintenance of the statue. The trust also plans to develop a museum, a library, a meditation center, and a garden around the statue.
The statue has attracted both admiration and criticism from different quarters. Some people have hailed it as a marvel of engineering and artistry, while others have questioned its environmental and social impact. Some critics have argued that the statue violates the norms of town planning and heritage conservation, as it alters the natural landscape and obscures the view of the historic Rajsamand Lake. Others have raised concerns about the safety and security of the statue, especially in case of natural disasters or vandalism.
The statue's supporters have dismissed these criticisms as baseless and motivated by jealousy or prejudice. They have claimed that the statue has boosted the tourism and economy of Rajsamand, as well as enhanced its prestige and identity. They have also asserted that the statue is a tribute to Lord Shiva and his devotees, who have a strong presence in Rajasthan and across India.
The world's tallest Shiva statue is expected to draw millions of visitors every year, who will come to admire its grandeur and seek its blessings. It is also likely to spark debates and discussions about the role and relevance of such mega projects in contemporary India.
