Wildlife Trust of India launches 'Whale Shark Rescue Operation' in Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep

Recently Delhi-based non-profit Wildlife Trust of India in association with Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep has launched 'Save the Whale Shark Campaign' in Mangalore. This campaign will be conducted in Coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep in collaboration with Karnataka, Kerala Forest and Fisheries Department and Lakshadweep Administration.

Apart from this, the purpose of this campaign is to reduce the incidence of whale sharks falling in the fishing nets and deaths caused due to this and to make fishermen aware about the protection of whale sharks. In this sequence, a mobile application has been developed to record the identification and rescue of whale sharks.

International whale shark day

August 30, 2022 was observed as International Whale Shark Day. This year's theme is The Future of Sharks: Guardians of Our Seas.

Whale

The whale is the largest species of shark on earth. Its length reaches up to 60 feet. This fish is of lethargy and calm nature. Usually it likes to swim in shallow water. Therefore, it becomes an easy prey for fishermen. Due to the meat market, the whale shark population has decreased by about fifty percent, due to which it is on the verge of extinction. The whale shark rescue mission will help this beautiful fish regain its former glory.
