The last President of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, passed away

On August 30, 2022, Mikhail Gorbachev, the then Soviet President of Russia, died in Moscow (Russia) after a prolonged illness. He was 91 years old. Gorbachev.played a central role in ending the Cold War.

He was born on March 2, 1931 in a.peasant family in the southern Stavropol region of Russia. Gorbachev grew up with the hardships of World War II and the regime of Joseph Stalin.

In 1990, Gorbachev was elected the first and last President of the Soviet Union. He changed the political fabric of Europe and marked the beginning of the end of the Cold War. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for his remarkable achievements in international relations. He served.as the President of the Soviet Union from 1990–91. On 25 December 1991, he resigned as the President of the Soviet Union. He supported Crimea annexation (2014) during the Ukraine crisis.

He joined the Komsomol (Young Communist League) in 1946. In 1952 he enrolled in law school at Moscow State University and became a member of the Communist Party.

He became the first secretary of the regional party committee in 1970. In 1971 he was named a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. In 1978, he was appointed Secretary of the Agriculture Party. He became a full member of the Politburo in 1980.

He took over the world's largest state and second superpower in 1985, when he was elected General. Secretary of the Communist Party. In December  1987 he signed an.agreement with the US President to destroy all existing stocks of intermediate. range nuclear tipped missiles. Gorbachev was a very. figure in the chain of events between 1989 and the late 1990s.

Due to the disintegration of the Soviet Union his policies were also - To improve the dying Soviet economy, Mikhail Gorbachev adopted 'Glasnost' (Openness) and 'Perestroika' (Restructuring) policies.
