International Parliamentarian Day 2023 observed across the world on 30 June
Every year 30 June is observed as International Parliamentary Day to commemorate the foundation date of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). The festival highlights the importance of Parliament in
safeguarding the democratic rights of the citizens.
The theme for 2023 is 'Parliament for the Planet', with a focus on climate action. The day was established in 2018 through a United Nations General Assembly resolution.
International Parliamentarian Day is a time to review that progress, including conducting a self-evaluation, working to include more women and young parliamentarians, and adapting to new technologies.
The IPU is an international association of national parliaments working to promote democratic governance, accountability, and cooperation among its members. The purpose of the Inter-Parliamentary Union is to strengthen democracy by establishing a parliamentary dialogue with peace and cooperation all over the world.
Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)
What began as a small group of parliamentarians in 1889 dedicated to promoting peace through parliamentary diplomacy and dialogue has since grown into a truly global organization with 179 members and 14 associate members.
Its slogan is Democracy for All. Its headquarter is in Geneva, Switzerland. It also has offices in New York, United States, and Vienna, Austria.
