Times Higher Education released the World University Rankings 2023


 On October 12, 2022, Times Higher Education (THE) released the World University Rankings 2023. Oxford University has emerged as the best institution among 1799 universities in 104 countries.

Indian Institute



 India is the sixth most prestigious performer in the year 2023 ranking with 75 universities. Indian Institute of Science (IISc) ranks top among Indian institutions for its performance score for teaching and research. Globally IISc is placed in the 251-300 band. IISc is also the top-ranked Indian institute in the year 2022 ranking.

 Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences in Himachal Pradesh (overall 351-400) ranks second among Indian institutions, which has been ranked for the first time. IIT Ropar which was the second-highest-ranked Indian institute in the year 2022 ranking is in the sixth position.

 The third place is the Alagappa University of Tamil Nadu which is a public institution.


 It has been boycotted for the third year in a row by most of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) over transparency concerns. The last time major IITs participated in the rankings was in the year 2019 when IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi were placed in the 401-500 overall bands behind IIT Ropar and IIT Indore.

Ranking Criteria


 The criteria by which institutions are ranked are teaching (30%), research (30%), citation (30%), international outlook (7.5%), and industry outcome (2.5%), based on the prestigious survey of 15% weightage in teaching and research.

The World University Rankings 2023 by Times Higher Education (THE) have been released, and they offer a comprehensive and diverse assessment of the global higher education landscape. The rankings include 1,799 universities from 104 countries and regions, based on 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators that measure an institution’s performance across four areas: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.

The University of Oxford tops the ranking for the seventh consecutive year, followed by Harvard University in second place. The University of Cambridge and Stanford University share the third spot, while the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the California Institute of Technology complete the top five. The US is the most-represented country overall, with 177 institutions, and also the most represented in the top 200 (58). The UK has 101 institutions in the ranking, with 28 in the top 200.

The rankings also reveal how the global higher education landscape is shifting, with some countries making significant gains while others stagnate or decline. For instance, Saudi Arabia has increased its representation across several subject rankings, including Computer science, Engineering and Physical sciences. Meanwhile, mainland China now has the fourth-highest number of institutions in the top 200 (11), having overtaken Australia, which has dropped to fifth (joint with the Netherlands).

The rankings also highlight the diversity and excellence of higher education around the world, with five countries entering the ranking for the first time – all of them in Africa (Zambia, Namibia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Mauritius). Moreover, Europe is the most represented continent in the top 300 for all subject rankings, followed by North America. The rankings also show that some institutions excel in specific areas, such as Harvard University topping the teaching pillar, Oxford University leading the research pillar, and Macau University of Science and Technology being atop the international pillar.
