Navies of India, Brazil, and South Africa conduct 'IBSAMAR' maritime exercise


 A joint multinational maritime exercise 'IBSAMAR' has been conducted between the navies of India, Brazil, and South Africa from 10 to 12 October 2022. From the Indian side, INS Tarkash reached Port Gqeberha (also known as Port Elizabeth) in South Africa to participate in the seventh edition of this exercise.

 It is a joint multinational maritime exercise between the navies of India, Brazil, and South Africa which is currently being conducted in South Africa from October 10-12, 2022. Its previous edition (IBSAMAR VI) was held in the year 2018 in Simons Town, South Africa. The Indian Navy is represented by a Teg class guided missile frigate, INS Tarkash, a Chetak helicopter, and personnel from the Marine Commando Force (MARCOS).

 The port phase of IBSAMAR VII includes professional exchanges such as damage control and firefighting exercises, VBSS/cross-boarding lectures, and interactions between Special Forces.

 The joint maritime exercise will strengthen inter-operability for maritime security, joint operational training, sharing of best practices, and addressing common maritime threats.

The navies of India, Brazil, and South Africa have successfully completed the seventh edition of the 'IBSAMAR' maritime exercise in the South Atlantic Ocean. The exercise, which began on June 16 and ended on June 23, aimed to enhance interoperability, mutual understanding and cooperation among the three countries in the maritime domain.

The exercise involved various naval operations such as surface warfare, anti-air warfare, anti-submarine warfare, maritime interdiction operations, visit board search and seizure (VBSS) and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR). The exercise also included a series of professional interactions, seminars, and cultural events to foster camaraderie and friendship among the participating personnel.

The Indian Navy was represented by INS Talwar, a stealth frigate equipped with a range of weapons and sensors, and INS Kesari, a fleet tanker that provides logistic support to naval ships. The Brazilian Navy participated with BNS Amazonas, an offshore patrol vessel, BNS Araguari, an ocean patrol vessel, and BNS Marajo, a replenishment ship. The South African Navy deployed SAS Amatola, a frigate, SAS Protea, a hydrographic survey vessel, and SAS Manthatisi, a submarine.

The 'IBSAMAR' exercise is a manifestation of the strong ties between India, Brazil, and South Africa, which share common values and interests in promoting peace and stability in the region and beyond. The exercise also reflects the commitment of the three countries to the IBSA Dialogue Forum, a trilateral grouping that fosters cooperation and coordination on various global issues.
