First Sloth Bear Day celebrated on 12 October

On October 12, 2022, the first World Sloth Bear Day is observed to create awareness about endemic bear species in the Indian subcontinent and strengthen conservation efforts.

It was proposed by Wildlife SOS India, an organization for sloth bear conservation for more than two decades and the IUCN-Species Survival Commission (SSC) sloth bear expert team (International Union for Conservation of Nature) acknowledged the day and declared to be celebrated around the world.

Sloth Bear

The sloth bear is one of the 8 species of bear found worldwide. Sloth bears feed mainly on termites and ants, and unlike other bear species, they regularly carry their cubs on their backs.

They like Honey very much, that is why their other name is also 'Honey Bear'. Sloth Bears do not hibernate. They are agile and are considered one of the most formidable wild animals. They are also known as the least researched bear species.
