Recently Karim Benzema has won the European Football Federation's (UEFA) Men's Player of the Year award, while Alexia Putellas has won the Best Female Player award.
Thus these awards were dominated by Spanish clubs. Benzema was a strong contender to win the men's title. He scored 15 goals in the Champions League and was instrumental in helping Real Madrid win a record 14th European title.
Putellas won the UEFA Women's Award for the second time in a row. She was instrumental in taking Barcelona to the final of the Champions League. Barcelona lost to Lyon in the final. She was to lead Spain in the European championship but due to a knee injury she could not take part in this tournament.
