World Population Day 2023 celebrated on the 11th of July
World Population Day, observed on 11 July, aims to raise awareness of global population issues and their impact on society.
The theme for World Population Day 2023 is "Unleashing the Power of Gender Equality: Raising the Voices of Women and Girls to Unlock the Infinite Potential of Our World".
This important event was established by the United Nations to emphasize the importance of addressing population-related concerns such as reproductive health, family planning, gender equality, and sustainable development.
According to the recent World Population Status Report 2023 of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), India has become the most populous country in the world with a population of 142.86 crores in the year 2023. At the same time, China has come in second place with a population of 142.57 crores.
History
The concept of World Population Day was initiated by the United Nations in 1989 following a proposal by Dr. KC Zakaria, on the eve of the worldwide population crossing five billion on 11 July 1987. More than 90 countries celebrated World Population Day for the first time on 11 July 1990. The United Nations Population Fund was established in the year 1969 and is headquartered in New York, United States.
