Meta launches Twitter rival messaging app 'Threads'

Mark Zuckerberg-led Meta launched its standalone messaging app 'Threads' in 100 countries on July 6, 2023, which is being considered as a rival to Twitter led by Elon Musk, the world's richest man.

The text-based app 'Threads' will connect to Instagram and users will be able to run 'Threads' with Instagram followers and usernames. Users will be able to connect directly with the creators on this app. Threads has been launched for iOS and Android users.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on his verified Threads account that the app received 10 million sign- ups within seven hours of its launch. The app has many similarities with Twitter, from layout to product descriptions.

The app comes at a time when Elon Musk's Twitter is struggling to generate decent revenue. Last month, media reports said Twitter's US advertising revenue dropped 59 percent from a year earlier.
