Canada Launches 'Digital nomad strategy' to attract foreign workers
Canada has taken a proactive approach to address the shortage of skilled workers, particularly in the technology industry. During Collision's tech conference in Toronto, the country's immigration minister announced the launch of a 'digital nomad strategy' aimed at attracting talented individuals from around the world.
Under the 'digital nomad strategy', foreign workers are allowed to stay in Canada for up to six months. If they receive job offers during their stay, they will have the opportunity to extend their time in the country.
Canada aims to create a balance between the demand for and supply of labor by allowing skilled workers to reside in the country, contributing to its economic growth, and investing within local communities.
Starting July 16, 2023, the government will establish an open work permit stream that will allow up to 10,000 US H-1B visa holders to work in Canada.
Two other Canadian government programs
Immigration stream for talented professionals: By the end of this year, the government plans to develop an immigration stream that will enable the world's best and brightest professionals to come to Canada under a work permit, even without a job offer.
Innovation Stream under International Mobility Programme: The government will create an innovation stream for skilled workers in select in-demand occupations. The program will foster collaboration with government-selected companies that contribute to Canada's innovation goals.
