Former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy passed away

 Senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister of Kerala Oommen Chandy passed away on 18 July 2023 at the age of 79 at a private hospital in Bengaluru at the age of 79. His last rites will be performed at Puthupalli Church in Kottayam. He was undergoing treatment for throat cancer for some time. The Kerala government has declared a two-day state mourning in then tate.

 A long-time MLA representing the Puthupalli constituency in Kottayam district and a hugely popular public figure, Chandy was the Chief Minister of Kerala twice. He headed the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) ministry in Kerala from 31 August 2004 to 12 May 2006 and from 18 May 2011 to 20 May 2016.

 Started 'Jan Sampark' program to address public issues during his tenure as Chief Minister.

 The veteran politician won the assembly elections in 1970 at the age of 27. Later he won the election for 11 consecutive times. He has the distinction of being the member of the State Legislative Assembly for the longest term.

 On October 30, 1943, Chandy became active in politics through the Kerala Students' Union (KSU) and the Youth Congress. He became the KSU general secretary in 1965 and its state general secretary in 1967.
