 Recently, the Central Government has appointed senior bureaucrat Rajendra Kumar as the Director General of Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC). Kumar, a 1992 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Tamil Nadu cadre, was earlier posted as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

 Let us tell you that the Employees' State Insurance Corporation was established on February 25, 1952. It is under the Ministry of Labor and Employment, Government of India.

Employees State Insurance Scheme [ESI Scheme]


 The Employees' State Insurance Scheme of India is a multi-faceted social security system that provides socio-economic security to the workers and their dependents covered under the scheme. This scheme was first started on February 24, 1952 in Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh). This scheme is operated by Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC).

 A comprehensive social security benefit of reasonable medical care and cash benefits is provided by ESIC to employees in cases of injury, illness or death at the workplace under the 'Employees' State Insurance Act, 1948' (ESI Act).
