Peru declares health emergency due to 'Guillain Barre Syndrome'

Guillainbarre syndrome (GBS) disease is spreading rapidly in the South American country of Peru. Due to this, from 9 July 2023, Health Emergency has been implemented in the entire country for 90 days. A similar emergency was imposed in the year 2019 as well. Four people have died there due to this disease.

To deal with the problem, President Dina Booluart has allocated $3.27 million to care for the patients. According to the report, since June 2023, 182 cases have been reported across the country. Of these, 147 have been discharged from the hospital, 31 are still admitted.

'Guillain Barre Syndrome'

Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS) is a neurological disorder and an autoimmune disease. Like other autoimmune diseases, when a patient has GBS, their immune system starts attacking their healthy cells instead of sick cells. It can affect any part of the peripheral nerves.

Mostly it affects the nervous system outside our brain and spinal cord. GBS can cause muscle weakness and in severe cases can lead to paralysis or death. At present, no treatment has been developed for this syndrome.
