Indore Municipal Corporation will be the first urban body to get EPR credit
The Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) in Madhya Pradesh, India, has created history by becoming the first urban body in the country
to receive Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) credits for recycling banned single-use plastic items.
Indore has implemented a complete ban on single-use plastic items within the city. In the recent past, the IMC seized about eight tonnes of such plastic, thereby stopping its spread.
Earning of EPR credits reflects the successful implementation of Plastic Waste Management Rules2016 (PWM) and EPR policy by IMC.
EPR
It is an environmental policy approach in which the producer's responsibility for a product is extended to the consumer stage of the product's life cycle. Indore's EPR credit is Rs 8,100, acknowledging IMC's commitment to responsible waste management and sustainable practices.
To meet the challenge of recycling the seized plastics, IMC set up a recycling plant operated under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP)
model.
