Sustainable Mountain Development Summit 2022 being held
The Sustainable Mountain Development Summit (SMDS)-11 is being organized in Leh (Ladakh) from October 10 to 12, 2022. Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupendra Yadav participated in the inaugural session.
The theme of this summit is "Using Tourism for Sustainable Mountain Development". The key point of this summit is to reduce the negative impacts of tourism and harness its positive contribution in building climate and socio-ecological strength and sustainability.
In his address, he said that a visit to Ladakh is always refreshing to see the beautiful and spectacular mountain views here. He also highlighted the establishment of Govind Ballabh Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment under the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and its regional center at Leh to undertake research and development activities especially with regard to the sustainability of the Himalayan environment.
He stressed that many special landscapes of the country like Himalayas, Western Ghats, Thar Desert need special attention from the scientific community.
