Modhera in Gujarat becomes the first solar powered village in the

On October 09, 2022, Modhera village of Gujarat has been declared as the first solar powered village in the country. For this 'Battery Energy Storage System' (BESS) will be used in the village. During the day, electricity will be generated from solar panels installed in the homes, while after sunset electricity will be supplied to the residents through BESS.

Significantly, in the past, the Central Government and the Government of Gujarat had launched the 'Modhera Sun Temple and City Solarisation' project to provide 24×7 solar energy through integration with BESS. For this first of its kind project, 12 hectares of land was allotted by the state government.

More than 1,300 1kW rooftop solar systems have been installed in all the houses in the village to generate electricity during the day. Along with this, heritage lighting and 3-D projection in the Sun Temple of Modhera village will also be powered through solar energy.

Modhera Sun Temple

It is an ancient temple located in Modhera village of Mehsana district which is about 100 km from Ahmadabad. This Sun temple was built by King Bhimdev I of the Chalukya dynasty in 1026 CE. This Sun temple is contemporary to the Chola temples in South India and the Chandela temples in the north.
