Japan to host Malabar Exercise 2022 in November 2022
In November 2022, Japan will host the Malabar Naval Exercise 2022. The exercise is scheduled to be held from November 8 to 18. Malabar 2021 was hosted by the US.
Malabar exercise
It is a multilateral war-games naval exercise, which was started in the year 1992. It started as a bilateral exercise between the navies of India and the United States of America. Two more editions of the exercise were conducted in 1995 and 1996, after which it was put on hold until 2002 in the backdrop of India's nuclear tests.
This exercise is being conducted annually since the year 2002.
Japan and Australia participated for the first time in the year 2007 and since 2014 India, USA and Japan are participating in this exercise every year. Australia also joined the Malabar exercise in the year 2020 at India's request to limit China's growing dominance in the Indo-Pacific region.
This was the first time in a decade that 'Malabar 2020' saw the participation of all four Quad members. Its purpose is to support a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region and to express a commitment to a rules-based international order.
