International Day for People of African Origin observed on 31st August

International Day for People of African Origin is being observed by the United Nations on 31 August 2022. The International Day for People of African Origin was first observed on August 31, 2021.

The United Nations' purpose of observing this day is to promote the extraordinary contribution of the African diaspora around the world and to end all forms of discrimination against people of African descent.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution to establish an International Day for People of African Origin in December 2020. The day was established by the United Nations General Assembly with the aim of promoting greater recognition and respect for the diverse heritage, culture and contribution of people of African descent to the development of society.

The day also seeks to promote respect for their human rights and fundamental freedoms. Apart from this, this day is important in the.light of the direction to end racism after 20 years of Durban Declaration and.Program of Action (DDPA).

Latin America, on the other hand, has about 134 million people from Africa and they suffer from poverty, lack of access to basic services and inequality. The overall poverty rate in Brazil is 11.5% while the poverty rate among people of African descent is 25.5%.
