Country's First Avalanche Surveillance Radar Installed In North Sikkim

 Recently the country's first Avalanche Surveillance Radar has been installed in North Sikkim by the Indian Army and DGRE. It is capable of detecting avalanches as well as landslides within 3 seconds.

 This radar is installed at an altitude of 15,000 feet. There is always the danger of avalanches at this altitude. With its help, soldiers as well as civilians in high altitude areas will be helped in saving from avalanches and landslides. This radar has the capability to automatically record images and videos of avalanches and landslides.

Defense Geoinformatics and Research Establishment (DGRE)


 It is a wing of the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) that works to provide local state-of-the-art solutions to the armed forces. The headquarters of DGRE is in Chandigarh. DRGE is an establishment formed with the merger of two premier laboratories of DRDO, Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE), Chandigarh and Defense Terrain Research Laboratory (DTRL), Delhi.

 DRGE is also involved in mapping, forecasting, monitoring, controlling and mitigating the
impact of landslides and avalanches in the Indian Himalayas.

 DRGE has five Research and Development Centers (RDCs) at Manali, Delhi, Tezpur, Tawang and Lachung. It also has three Mountain Meteorological Centers (MMCs) at Srinagar, Auli and Sasoma.
