Apeksha Fernandes has become the first Indian female player to reach the finals of the 2022 World Junior Swimming Championships. She finished eighth in the final of the women's 200m butterfly at the ongoing competition in Lima, Peru.

The 17-year-old Indian swimmer clocked 2:19.14 in the final on Wednesday to finish last among eight swimmers.

Apeksha improved her own 'best Indian time' earlier in qualifying by clocking 2:18.18 sec to make it to the final. She has become the first Indian woman to reach the final of a world competition. Her previous best was 2:18.39 sec, which she had set in June, but is still awaiting recognition from the Swimming
