the first woman Director General
of Police of Meghalaya
Meghalaya has created history by
appointing Idashisha Nongrang as
the first woman Director General of
Police (DGP) of the state.
Nongrang, a 1992 batch Indian
Police Service (IPS) officer, will
replace Lajja Ram Bishnoi, who is
scheduled to retire on May 19, 2024.
Hailing from the Khasi community,
one of the three matrilineal ethnic
communities in Meghalaya,
Nongrang's appointment holds
significant cultural significance.
The Khasi, along with the Garo and
Jaintia, follow a matrilineal system,
where lineage and inheritance are
traced through the mother's
lineage.
Nongrang, who currently serves as
the Director General of Meghalaya
Civil Defence, has demonstrated
exceptional leadership qualities
throughout her career. She had
earlier served as the acting DGP in
2021.
Nongrang's appointment as the
state police chief was widely
supported by the three major
political parties – United
Democratic Party, Voice of the
People Party and the state unit of
the Bharatiya Janata Party.
The Union Public Service
Commission (UPSC) had
recommended the names of
Nongrang, Ram Prasad Meena
(ADG, Border Security Force) and
Deepak Kumar (ADG, Central
Reserve Police Force) for this
prestigious post.
Nongrang will serve as Meghalaya
police chief till May 19, 2026,
overseeing the state's law
enforcement agencies and
ensuring maintenance of law and
order.
