China and Vietnam were most affected by 'Talim Typhoon' in South China Sea

Talim, the first typhoon to make landfall in China this year, hit the coast of Guangdong province on 17 July 2023, with a wind speed of 136.8 kmph. Apart from this, it affected most in Quang Ninh and Hai Phong provinces of Vietnam.

The name 'Talim' has been used for four tropical cyclones in the western Pacific Ocean. The name was given by the Philippines and is a Filipino word meaning "a sharp or cutting edge".

In response to Typhoon Talim, the Hong Kong Observatory issued Alert Level Number 8, the third-highest alert level for the first time this year. The most powerful tropical cyclone ever recorded in the region was Super Typhoon Haiyan in 2013.

About 230,000 people were evacuated in Guangdong before the typhoon hit, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported. The impact of the storm was felt more than 1,000 km to the northeast in the city of Fuzhou in Fujian
province.

China experiences the flood season from late July to early August. During this period, there is an increase in tropical cyclone and typhoon activity, particularly in the South China Sea and western Pacific, with particular emphasis on the country's southern and southeastern coastal areas.
