World Mental Health Day observed on 10 October
World Mental Health Day is observed every year on 10 October. This year the theme of World Mental Health Day is 'Make mental health & well-being for all a global priority'. Mental health disorders are one of the most common diseases occurring around the world. According to the World Health Organization, the estimated number of people suffering from mental disorders is 450 million.
In India this number is about 1.5 million, including children and adolescents. Mental illness affects the way a person feels, thinks and acts, so the Government of India launched the National Mental Health Program (NMHP) in the year 1982 with the aim of considering the increasing pressure of mental illness in the country.
The main causes of this disease can be environmental stress such as anxiety, loneliness, low self-esteem, death in the family or divorce, psychological trauma resulting from accidents, violence and rape etc., can help them through efforts like understanding the feelings and nature of the victim and communicating effectively with them, providing emotional and social support as well as being patient with them and helping to boost their self-confidence, etc.
