First Indigenous Vaccine Against Cervical Cancer Will Be Launched

The quadrivalent human papillomavirus (qHPV) vaccine is being launched for the prevention of cervical cancer. This is India's first indigenously developed vaccine.

In this context, the market authorization was given by the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) to Serum Institute of India (SII) last month. This qHPV vaccine is CERVAVAC which exhibits strong antibody response.

This is approximately 1,000-fold higher for all target HPV types and for all doses and age groups. The early availability of qHPV will be ensured in collaboration with the Department of Biotechnology under the Ministry of Science and Technology.

It is worth noting that in India, cervical cancer is the second most frequent cancer among women aged 15 to 44 years.

 Cervical Cancer

It is a type of cancer that occurs in the cells of the cervix. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted infection. Its various strains play a role in causing most cervical cancers. Women are at risk of getting cervical cancer.

Let us inform that Serum Institute of India (SII) was established in 1966 by Dr. Cyrus Poonawalla.
